How to claim compensation if your flight was delayed or cancelled

Claim up to 600 euro per person

If you have suffered a flight delay of longer than 3 hours, or your flight was cancelled with less than 2 weeks’ notice you may be entitled to compensation from your airline.

EU legislation enables travellers who are eligible to claim up to 600 euro per person if their flight was delayed, cancelled by the airline or over booked.

The really good news is, you can still make a claim for flights that were 6 years ago.

When is compensation payable?

Flight Cancellations

If you were booked to travel on a flight which was subsequently cancelled by your airline you are entitled to compensation under EU law, unless;

  • Four hours of more

Denied boarding (over-booked)

  • Sometimes airlines request volunteers to give up their seat on a flight due to over booking, if they do not have enough volunteers the airline may deny boarding against the passengers will.  In this situation the passenger is due compensation immediately.

Can an airline turn down your claim?

Yes, an airline can turn down your claim for compensation if the delay or cancellation was due to extraordinary circumstances.

An extraordinary circumstance is something which is outside the control of the airline and something which is not their fault. Eg. Extreme weather conditions, political unrest, employee strikes.

Delays and cancellations caused by technical problems, influenced by other flights and problems at the airport should all be subject to cancellation.
